J Visa, Exchange-Visitor Program

Foreign scholars, experts, industrial trainees as well as students can enter the United States to gain experience, study, or do research in their fields of study. The permissible of period of stay depends on types of category the visitor in admitted into:

Students: students in program below the doctoral level may be able to employ the 18 months of training after completion of their degree while the students in post-doctoral may engage in 36 months of training after completion their degree programs.

Short-term scholars: Foreign scholars are permitted to enter the U.S. for a period of six months with no extensions allowed.

Trainees: Business trainees can engage in their programs for a period of 18 months in the U.S. In addition, in flight trainee may be permitted to stay for 24 months.

Teachers: Foreign primary and secondary teacher can get training for a three year period.

University Professors and Research Scholars: They are allowed to engage in the program of their fields for a period of five years.

Specialist: applicants in this category may be allowed to stay in the U.S. up to one year.

Foreign Medical Graduates: Foreign medical graduate’s duration of stay in the U.S. as internship and residents depends on the length of programs. There is a maximum of seven years, but additional time may be permitted under complex rules.


Applicants of this visa must prove their financial capacity to participate in program in the U.S. Additionally, some sponsor organizations provide financial supports such as by giving aids or scholarship. Also, spouse and children under of age of 21 of the applicant may be permitted to accompany the applicant in the U.S., but a proof of sufficient funds for all family members is required.
